Review by Fran Grant. To buy, Wrap: bit.ly/didyrainbow RS: bit.ly/rainbowrs
For the last week or so I've had the pleasure of playing with the Didymos Rainbow Fish. I've always had a soft spot for the fishies (possibly the Piscean in me), but have only previously tried Carmin (gorgeous but too thick and dense for my taste) and Beautiful Lau (mid-weight, hempy soft and lovely). Rainbow Fish is all cotton, smooth and closely woven in Didy's new rainbow-grad warp, and punctuated by those highly textured little fish. The natty weft makes the colours bright and bold - this is a happy rainbow. (continues below...)
The grad effect is kind of fascinating up close, with pinstripes leading up to a herringbone-style crossover from one colour to the next. Rainbow is a thicker fish, officially 270 GSM but reportedly coming in at over 300 GSM in real life. It doesn't feel as thick as those numbers would suggest. It's flat in hand but fairly supple despite the dense weave. Pleasant to handle out of the box, should get truly soft and floppy with some use, but after a quick bath, air dry and steam iron on both sides it's very wearable.
My tester is a ring sling, but based on its qualities in that form I think it'd make a fantastic mid-length wrap. It'd also be totally sturdy in a rebozo, and really solid and comfy in base size with bigger babes or toddlers. As a ring sling the fabric is firm and supportive with little stretch and no sag, and slides smoothly through the rings (except for one early attempt when I had the top rail twisted). I'm far from a pro with a ring sling and my 5-month-old is a little leg-straightener, but this sling actually makes me feel like I know what I'm doing. It eased cleanly up over baby's back with no bunching, and tightened nicely. I found the top rail slipped just a touch initially, but another tug or two on the fabric pulled everything in tight and snug.
It's also eye-catchingly gorgeous. I don't tend to go for rainbows in my wraps, but this one is cheery and bold, and I love the way the different colours flash through depending on how it's worn. Although it's not an airy weave I could see this being a great summer shorty, and it's a perfect beach wrap (though pretty fantastic in the snow as well!).
What do you think of Didymos new Rainbow Grads?
